Celebrating the New Montego Bay Cultural Centre

The up and coming Montego Bay Cultural Centre is near and dear to Round Hill's heart, as our very own Josef Forstmayr (who chairs the 14-member Montego Bay Arts Council) has been a driving force behind this $62 million rehabilitation of the 12-year old Montego Bay Civic Centre. "There will be a gift shop, a bistro which will display the best of Jamaican food; there will be an artisan village where we will have artisans in residence that will do productive work there; there will be poetry reading, music, dance.....," an elated Forstmyar told the Jamaica Observer West. Parts of the new centre will serve as a branch of the National Museum as well as the National Gallery, and other improvements include the installation of elevators, generators, water pumps, security cameras, and major repairs to sanitary conveniences. The original Civic Centre was built on the ruins of the old court house that was destroyed by a fire over 40 years ago, and became the centerpiece of Sam Sharpe Square. Costing... > Read full post.

Calabash Literary Festival

Calabash Festival FFinal

The Calabash International Literary Festival returns this year with an impressive roster of accomplished authors. The three-day festival held in Treasure Beach, Jamaica, boasts readings and music with other forms of storytelling folded in the mix. Founded in 2001 by novelist Colin Channer with the support of two friends - poet Kwame Dawes and the producer Justine Henzell - Calabash is earthy, inspirational, daring and diverse. True to their original mission, the festival's aim is simple—to create a world-class literary festival with roots in Jamaica and branches reaching out into the wider world. After 10 successive years Calabash is now staged on a biennial basis on even years. All festival events are free and open to the public. Passion is the only price of entry. Voluntary contributions are welcomed. Round Hill is organizing a trip for guests who would like to attend the Calabash Literary Festival on Saturday May 31, 2014. Round Hill Feature: Meet The Pastry Chef

Chef Peterkin at work 2

Round Hill is delighted to welcome our new pastry chef, Lincoln Peterkin. The pastry chef at Round Hill is quite an important position, as the hotel features freshly baked pastries from early morning breakfast to afternoon tea to evening delights. And not just any pastries, we might add. Round Hill is renowned by guests for specialties such as Rum Balls, Tarts and buttery Scones. To welcome him aboard, we asked Chef Lincoln a few personal questions that we'd like to share with you: 1. How did you become a Pastry Chef? Originally I wanted to join the army, but that dream was quickly discouraged by my mother who was strongly against the idea. I tried my hand at being a waiter for a number of years but did not find fulfilment so I decided to pursue a career. My love for baking made it an obvious choice. To develop my skill I worked for 6 months some days from 6 am to 11pm without pay just so that I could learn the craft. I have not looked back since. 2. What is your favourite thing to bake? I... > Read full post.

A Round Hill Reverie (post by Reggie Darling)

Round Hill Bay

The below post was written by a dear guest of Round Hill, who visited us this past October. We wanted to share his story with you, so please enjoy! You may visit his blog here: http://reggiedarling.blogspot.com Now that the madness of the Christmas season is over, Dear Reader, I'm planning on posting a series of essays that have been in my queue for some time.  Today's post, a review of one of the Caribbean's most storied resorts, is the first in the line up. This past October Boy and I visited Round Hill in Jamaica, to celebrate a milestone birthday for Boy. The Main Lodge at Round Hill Round Hill is one of the fabled Caribbean resorts, and one that I've always wanted to visit.  This was my first—and I'm confident will not be my last—stay at the Queen of Jamaica's resorts. Situated on a secluded, 100+ acre peninsula near Montego Bay, Jamaica, Round Hill has virtually nothing in common with the enormous all-inclusive resorts the island is known for.  Round Hill is,... > Read full post.

Round Hill Hotel Hosts Royalty & Celebrities at Premier Social Event in aid of Hanover Charities

Ralph Lauren, Ricky Lauren and HRH Prince Michael of Kent

Ralph Lauren, Ricky Lauren and HRH Prince Michael of Kent The iconic Round Hill Hotel in Montego Bay, Jamaica once again hosted a very special event on Saturday, February 15 – the 57th Annual Sugar Cane Ball in aid of Hanover Charities. One of the premier parties during the busy winter social calendar – the Sugar Cane Ball, like Round Hill Hotel, has become synonymous with chic – and this year was no exception with the Co-Chair’s for the event, Nan Brenninkmeyer and Nazee Klotz, being inspired by Truman Capote’s 1966 Black & White Ball. Truman Capote spent many a holiday at Round Hill Hotel with his favorite “Swan” Babe Paley and her husband William, who owned Cottage 26 and the Hotel most definitely complimented the Black & White Theme. Radford Klotz, Daisy Soros, Rainer Schoenbach of Germany There was very much an international feel to the evening with HRH Prince Michael of Kent flying in especially to attend as did Ralph & Ricky Lauren, and their family –... > Read full post.

Valentine's Day the Round Hill Way

Love is in the air! It's Valentine's Day in honor of this day, we are sharing some of the history associated with the holiday, as well as how you can make any day romantic with the help of Round Hill! Valentine's Day or "Saint Valentine's Day" is a time when couples openly express and shower their significant other with various demonstrations of love. There are many stories on the origin of Valentine's Day, but the most common is that this day, February 14, commemorates Saint Valentine, a third-century Roman saint and is associated with the tradition of courtly love. However, for many, it's simply a day for lovers to celebrate each other and their love with showers of affection. There are a number of ways to celebrate the day - these include dining out, going to the movies, sending or receiving flowers, chocolates, stuffed animals, jewelry, cards, or even sharing a romantic love poem with your partner. Celebrate Valentine's Day year round at Round Hill - from an incredibly romantic, candlelit... > Read full post.
