Kingsley Blake Awarded 2014 “Concierge of the Year” by Caribbean Journal

Many of you who have visited us know Kingsley Blake very well. His signature turquoise jacket, kind eyes and friendly smile have been welcoming guests to Round Hill for over four decades. Our renowned chief concierge could not be more deserving of his recent 2014 “Concierge of the Year” award from Caribbean Journal.

Concierge Kingsley Blake has been welcoming guests to Round Hill since 1974.

Concierge Kingsley Blake has been welcoming guests to Round Hill since 1974.

Born in Hopewell, Hanover, on February 2, 1953, Kingsley has now been with Round Hill for 42 years. Kingsley learned everything about the hospitality business on the job, and it’s easy to see that Kingsley was born to be a stellar concierge. A family man with three grown children of his own – two girls and one boy – he loves to be around kids. In his experience, “If the kids are happy, the family will be happy…and it is the kids who bring families together.”

Kingsley is a kind man who always finds joy in his work. “My daily prayer is that I will be able to make even one person happy at work,” he says. This insight inspires Blake to excel at his duties, which include escorting guests to rooms and arranging tours, transportation and babysitting services. Guests of all ages enjoy talking with the fascinating storyteller.

Kingsley_Travel ChannelKingsley will tell you that the proudest moment in his lengthy career happened when he was a bell captain. On one particular day, he beckoned a frightened 3-year-old girl over to him to say hello. Despite her unsteady gait, she walked to him and held on to his jacket. On seeing her there, her mother let out a shriek and both her and the girl’s father were in a state of shock. They ran over and once they were able to calm down, they told him through tears that doctors said that their little girl would not be able to walk until she was 8 years old. But that day, she walked to Blake, and everyone at Round Hill witnessed a real-life miracle.

We sat down with Kingsley recently to put together a few little known facts about everybody’s favorite concierge. Enjoy!

  • When you’re not working at Round Hill, what do you like to do?
    • I love playing my favorite game, Dominoes, with friends and a Red Stripe. I also love football and cricket
  • What is your favorite food?
    • Jamaican Jerk Pork
  • How Many Managing Directors & General Managers have you worked with in your time here?
    • I have worked with 3 Managing Directors and 6 General Managers
  • What is an interesting fact we wouldn’t know about you?
    • I still have the first $1 tip that I ever received. I received it on November 17, 1972 from a gentleman that drove a Blue Maverick. Now, when I do orientation for people starting at Round Hill, I give each person a $1 bill at the end and tell them, “If you can keep this, you can keep your job.”

Wise words from a wonderful man. Please join us in congratulating Kingsley on this well-deserved recognition. And next time you are at Round Hill, look for him in the turquoise jacket.

Yoga Master Tao Porchon-Lynch Graces Yogis at Round Hill

“There is nothing you cannot do.” – Tao-Porchon-Lynch

In December, Round Hill was graced with the presence of the remarkable ninety-six year old Tao Porchon-Lynch, the world’s oldest living yoga master, who led a complimentary evening yoga class on property. This unforgettable experience gave yogis the opportunity to practice alongside Tao, as she shared her wisdom and kind spirit with all in attendance. Yogis enjoyed a master class as well as vegetarian hors’ d’oeuvres and wine as they mingled and snapped photos with the legend herself.

The Jamaica Observer stated “Yogi enthusiasts in attendance — totally oblivious to the heavy rains outside of the confines of the Hanover Room — drew inspiration from the French-Indian yogi, dancer, oenophilist, former model and actress as she – drawing from her life experiences — offered hope and shared words of wisdom, at all times conveying her mantra ‘There is nothing you cannot do’.”

Extraordinary leaders and teachers change the way we perceive the world. The very best lead us by their example. Tao Porchon-Lynch, Master Yoga teacher, 96 years young, synthesizes the most positive aspects of Indian, European and American thought. Tao is uniquely equipped to spread Yogic insights, originating in India, to Westerners seeking enlightenment.

2015 Sugar Cane Ball on Valentine’s Day to Celebrate Hollywood Glitz & Glamour

It is that time again when Hanover Charities host their very special event, the Sugar Cane Ball, this year being celebrated on Valentine’s Day Saturday, February 14 – at the iconic Round Hill Hotel & Villas in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

A fixture on the international and local social scene, which sees the good and the great gathering from all over the World – the 2015 Sugar Cane Ball, now in its 58th outing, will celebrate the glitz and glamour of Hollywood.

Last year, Hanover Charities broke its own records and raised over US$230,000 in the single night, so the pressure is on!

Says Chair of Hanover Charities and this year’s Co-Chair for the Sugar Cane Ball Katrin Casserly “The majority of our funds are raised from the Silent Auction items for the Ball, which are always unique and one-off, gathered by the very generous homeowners of Round Hill and Tryall. Last year they outdid themselves and promise to do so again for Valentines!”

Co-Chair of Hanover Charities and also this year’s Sugar Cane Ball, Jennifer Flanagan of Tryall adds“ We were beyond thrilled with the generosity of the party goers last year. Our dedicated committee members and their neighbours at Round Hill and Tryall want to see our many projects continue & grow so we are really looking forward to seeing what they have for us this year”.

One of the premier partys’ during the busy winter social calendar – the Sugar Cane Ball, which specifically raises money for Hanover Charities, has become synonymous with chic – and this year will be no exception celebrating Hollywood with international and local guests partying for a good cause.

With the Sugar Cane Ball’s Silent Auction long being a highlight of the evening like last year’s Dinner At Downton Abbey, this year’s items are already on par such as lunch at Blenheim Palace with Lord Charles Spencer Churchill – the Churchill family having a long association with Jamaica.

There will also be a very exciting live auction, which last year raised nearly $20,000 in half an hour.

The Sugar Cane Ball Raffle tickets are also highly anticipated – especially as patrons don’t have to attend to have a ticket – and with a US$5000 spending spree at Ralph Lauren, who wouldn’t want to try their luck!

All proceeds from this special night, including a week-long Gallery of West Indian Art Exhibition, go directly to fund the many projects of Hanover Charities – in the past 10 years alone, nearly US$3,000,000 has been donated from this single evening event.

Where do the funds go? — Education is a key focus for Hanover Charities and there are several education-based schemes supported by the Ball’s funds, including from 2014, 72 scholarships that have been awarded in the fields of medicine, law, education, social work and communications.

There is a soup kitchen feeding over 700 people a week, and an annual health fair as well as many other permanent projects.

Round Hill in the Kitchen: Watermelon Feta Salad with Basil-Ginger Dressing

As the snow is falling and winter is well underway, we’re celebrating the season with warm, white sand, ice-cold drinks and refreshing dishes. One of chef’s most raved about salads is the Watermelon Feta salad, and he’s been kind enough to share the recipe with us. Utilizing ingredients from Round Hill’s Organic Garden, this salad is a beautiful combination of sweet and salty, light and rich.

Bring the tropics to you this winter with this cool, refreshing salad and you’ll instantly be transported to a land of sunshine, warm water and tropical breezes.

Watermelon Feta Salad - Round Hill Restaurant Recipe

Watermelon Feta Salad with Basil-Mint Dressing

Salad:

Watermelon – Red & Yellow, Cut Into Cubes
Maldon/Sea Salt
Olive Oil to taste
Basil Seeds
Fresh Mint
Micro Greens
Basil-Ginger Dressing

Basil-Ginger Dressing:

12 oz Ginger Syrup (to make from scratch, combine simple syrup and ginger to taste. heat and stir until ginger is incorporated)
2 oz Fresh Basil
1 oz Parsley

Place the basil seeds in basil water (a combination of basil & water that has been blended and strained) 1 hour before use – this will cause the seeds to swell and take on basil flavour. To prepare the salad, cut yellow and red watermelon into cubes and toss lightly with olive oil and sea salt. Place watermelon onto plate and top with crumbled feta cheese and basil seeds. To make the basil-ginger dressing, blend all ingredients together, pour over salad and garnish with fresh mint and micro greens.

Jamaica Cuisine Week 2014 in Tokyo, JapanThe Terrace Restaurant at Hotel Okura, Tokyo recently hosted Jamaica Cuisine Week on September 8-15, 2014 – showcasing custom crafted fine Jamaican cuisine – which by all reports was a monumental success.

Picture attractively designed lunch and dinner menus, a display area populated with may items signifying Jamaican culture and history, and continuous reggae music while you dine on authentic Jamaican cuisine in a foreign land.

Round Hill’s very own Chef Martin Maginley crafted the authentic Jamaican menu with local Jamaican staples such as Red Pea Soup, Cod Fish Fritter and Bread Pudding. The dishes were faithfully and impressively replicated locally by the Chef at the Terrace restaurant much to the delight of both local Jamaican and Japanese patrons.
