The 2014 Sugar Cane Ball: Benefiting Hanover Charities

INSPIRED BY TRUMAN CAPOTE’S FAMOUS 1966 “BLACK & WHITE” BALL

Montego Bay, Jamaica:

2014 Invitation CoverSince its over 55 years in existence, the Hanover Charities Sugar Cane Ball has covered many themes – from James Bond, to Pirates, to last year’s tribute to the 70’s with the recreation of the iconic Studio 54.

The 2014 Sugar Cane Ball is going to step back another decade to the 60’s, and this time the inspiration comes from an iconic event - the writer Truman Capote’s famous Black and White Masked Ball.

At the time, Capote’s event was the epitome of elegance and saw the world’s glitterati of that era gather in New Yorks’ Plaza Hotel Ballroom.

It was said of Truman Capote’s party  – that if you weren’t invited – you better leave town!

Painting 2Luckily that won’t be the case on Saturday, February 15, 2014 – where the gorgeous and glamorous will again be gathering in Black & White, but this time for a good cause, to support Hanover Charities and the many projects that are funded and depend on the proceeds of The Sugar Cane Ball.

Round Hill Hotel Montego Bay, the timeless epitome of elegance, will again be the venue for this annual event, which is especially fitting, as many of the revelers at Capote’s party were regular guests and even homeowners at Round Hill.  Babe Paley – one of Capote’s best friends – or swans as he would call them - owned Cottage 26.

In fact, who is to say that Capote didn’t get his original inspiration from Round Hill’s famous Black & White Bar?

We will never know, but what we do know is that, as always with the Sugar Cane Ball, the emphasis is really on the reason for the gathering – Hanover Charities.

Silent Auction 4All proceeds go to Hanover Charities and it is not just from the ball. Funds are also raised during the night through an Art Exhibition as well as the infamous silent auction of unique items collected by the homeowners of Round Hill Hotel and Tryall and the sale of the highly-anticipated raffle tickets, which every year feature one of a kind items such as a US$5,000 spending spree at the Ralph Lauren Manhattan flagship store.

In the past 10 years alone, over US$2,000,000 has been donated from this single evening event.

Education is a key focus for Hanover Charities and there are several education-based schemes supported by the funds, including 42 tertiary level scholarships that have been awarded in the fields of medicine, law, education, social work and communications.

A soup kitchen feeding over 700 people a week, and an annual health fair are other permanent projects.

For the Sugar Cane 2014 Black & White Ball, the invitation is open (though limited) and Reservations for Lauren Bush, David Lauren, Ricky & Ralph Lauren with Josef Forstmayrthe evening can be made via email to Katrin@hanovercharities.com.
